Lithium ion batteries

Mitsubishi and GS Yuasa Corporation are forming a new joint venture company to develop and build large format lithium ion batteries for automotive applications. The cooperative effort will kick off with an investment of about $30 million to install equipment at Yuasa's main plant to produce up to 200,000 lithium cells annually. The initial batteries will be based on Yuasa's LIM series batteries and Mitsubishi wants to ensure a supply of batteries for their next-generation electric vehicle, the i MiEV which they want to have in production by 2010.
